Washington, D.C. – The Association of Clinical Research Organizations (ACRO) today is proud to announce that Senator Tom Carper (D-DE) and Congressman Fred Upton (R-MI) have been named its 2014 Legislators of the Year, to coincide with ACRO’s first-ever Innovation Month this September. Carper recently introduced the COMPETE Act and Upton, Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, launched the House’s bipartisan 21st Century Cures initiative earlier this year.
“ACRO members work every day overseeing and improving the clinical trial processes that bring life-saving medicines and treatments to patients around the world who are waiting for cures,” said Doug Peddicord, Executive Director of ACRO. “Optimizing clinical trials, however, requires more than just the commitment of CROs and our research sponsors. Legislative and regulatory policies must be reformed to encourage and accommodate real-time responsiveness and innovation in the clinical trial space. That’s why we are proud to recognize Chairman Fred Upton and Senator Tom Carper as our 2014 Legislators of the Year. Both are leading the charge in Congress to increase cooperation, collaboration, and communication among regulatory bodies, research sponsors, and CROs-exactly what our industry needs and what patients deserve.”

To showcase the clinical research industry’s commitment to innovation and accomplishments in making the clinical trial process more open, expedient, and cost efficient, freshman Congressman Scott Peters (D-CA)-also a champion of CROs and advancements in life sciences-will be delivering remarks on the floor of the House of Representatives later this month.

ACRO INNOVATION MONTH: A LEGACY OF IMPROVING TRIALS TO QUICKEN THE PACE OF PATIENT CURES
Every year, members of the Association of Clinical Research Organizations (ACRO) conduct more than 9,000 clinical trials in 142 countries around the world.
